CONYERS, Ga — In 1957, Rockdale County officials opened the doors to the new Pine Street Elementary school and 60 years later, it is now the oldest public school in the county. Recently, county officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new state-of-the-art facility that will soon replace the old elementary school with space for 900 students. The new two-story, 170,000 square foot facility will be unlike any other in the state of Georgia. The school has been designed with flexibility in mind as learning can happen everywhere. Classes can be held in any of the 51 classrooms, the corridors, the rotunda, the media center, the cafeteria, courtyard, and outside. Writable walls, tackable wall surfaces, a colorful exterior with brick stones, LED lighting, as well as integration of the latest technology-based education tools, have also been incorporated into this $22 million project.

Lewis Contracting Services started site development work at the site of the elementary school in May 2017 and the school is slated to open for the 2018-19 academic year. Lewis Contracting Services will clear the site of existing trees, shrubs and vegetation ensuring positive drainage to be maintained on site to prevent ponding. They will provide complete erosion control, grading, underground utilities, sanitary and storm sewers and systems, and water systems.
