Named after popular local resident, Colonel John H. Boston, former Boston Homes was a 125-unit public housing project for low-income families located in Marietta, GA. Built in 1949, the apartments had never had any major renovations done to them, there were no modern amenities, not even air-conditioning. By 2008 the complex had fallen into such a poor state of repair the board of the Marietta Housing Authority voted to have the whole complex demolished rather than paying $16 million to fix it.

Boston Homes was located on 19 acres in the shadow of the Big Chicken, northwest of Roswell Street and Cobb Parkway. The housing authority moved all the families out to private housing using Section 8 vouchers. Research found that concentrating large volumes of low-income families together had the side effect of creating high-crime areas, so the trend to demolish these projects in Atlanta and other cities across the nation is rapidly increasing. Marietta and Cobb have eliminated almost all the county’s public family housing projects. The last families moved out of Boston Homes in 2010 and the buildings were demolished.

Lewis Contracting Services has been retained as the prime contractor to redevelop this prime piece of land. Owner and developer, Brock Built Homes was approved to construct a new 99-unit development made up of 75 detached homes which will be sold for between $280,000 and 340,000; and 24 townhomes, which will be sold for between $260,000 and 290,000. This $30 million redevelopment called Marvelle will further the City’s vision to increase owner occupancy and increase the quality of single family detached housing.

Work is already underway, and Lewis Contracting Services have demolished the remaining structures, cleared the site of existing trees, shrubs and vegetation ensuring positive drainage to be maintained on site to prevent ponding. They have also provided complete erosion control, grading, underground utilities, sanitary and storm sewers and systems, and water systems.
