ATLANTA, Ga., — Known for its Victorian mansions and Craftsman bungalows, the booming neighborhood of Grant Park is the oldest city park in Atlanta and home to Zoo Atlanta as well as nearby Oakland Cemetery. In recent years, the popularity of this area has increased exponentially, and in response to a lack of visitor parking, the City of Atlanta recently selected the Winter Johnson Group to design and build an iconic 1,000-space parking deck and restaurant at the Boulevard side of Grant Park.
The new Grant Park Parking Deck project will replace the existing seven-acre parking lot off Boulevard. Embedded into the hillside, the three-tier deck will utilize the existing green space to complement the historic landscape surrounding architecture as well as accommodate the neighborhood growth. The project will accommodate current and future parking demand, reduce traffic congestion and improve safety. The building’s “green roof” will have planted vegetation to reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality “and create an attractive outdoor green space for the neighborhood.
Lewis Contracting Services has been selected as the site development contractor to work with Winter Johnson on this $48 million project. The work will include clearing and grubbing, site demolition of the existing parking lot, grading for the new parking deck structure. LCS will also be responsible for installing and upgrading an existing water feature, storm drainage and infrastructure work including an underground cistern with an underground detention system, and modular block walls. The excavation along Boulevard will include a temporary, potentially permanent soil nail wall with excavations reaching up to 38 vertical ft., with haul off and disposal of 70,000 CY of dirt.
